Summer Reading for Sixth Grade
Students entering the sixth grade for the 2014-2015 school year are required to read one book from the following list. A multiple choice quiz is also required to check for comprehension and will be used as a grade by your English Language Arts teacher. The book you choose should be read by the first week of school. Quizzes can be taken during the summer in our Media Center or during the first week of school with your teacher. The Media Center will be open this summer for book check-out and quizzes.

Summer Reading for Seventh Grade
We are excited to send our students off with endless reading possibilities this summer. This letter includes the guidelines for summer reading for the upcoming 7th graders at Narcoossee Middle School and some resources that will help them. Reading is the most important lifelong skill we can help our students to learn and practice. Along with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), we believe that reading is not just a skill that one learns in elementary school but a developmental and continual process throughout life. Throughout the school year students work on building a reading life, and the primary purpose for summer reading is for students to maintain their reading life during the summer months.

NCMS 2014 Summer Reading Requirements for Rising 8thGraders
Students that will be in 8th grade next year at Narcoossee Middle School are asked to read at least one SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Reader Award) book during the summer. The list of the SSYRA books is located on the school website at http://ncms.osceola.k12.fl.us. Students will take a quiz on the book they read when they return to school in August.
Students are also encouraged to read for pleasure this summer. These books may be the students’ choice and they will not be tested on these books. We want students to explore and enjoy the world through reading.
TeenBiz is also available to students all summer. Completing at least two articles per week will be beneficial for students in keeping reading skills sharp. The NCMS Media Center will be open every Tuesday from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Computers will be available for students to complete TeenBiz and log in their Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge minutes. Students may also take their book quiz during the summer if they come to the Media Center on a Tuesday during the open hours.
